France is a country popular for a number of reasons, from the delicious food and wine to couture fashion. Of course, when people talk about fragrances, it is not surprising to think of France. After all, this country is home to some of the biggest and most popular perfumeries in the world. But, does the popularity of these French perfumes also translate to them being considered the best in the world?

France’s Perfume History

Many thought the French invented perfumes, but truth be told it was the ancient civilization of Egypt, Rome and other parts of the Middle East that perfumes originated from. In its early days perfume was predominantly used to camouflage body odor since during those times bathing regularly was unheard of. By the Renaissance, perfumes became sort of a fashion statement and the demand for sweet-smelling concoction grew.

1. The Use of Expensive Raw Materials

In its the early days, perfumes are almost exclusively made using expensive plant essences rather than aroma chemicals. Right up till this day Grasse, believed to be heart of the French perfume industry, is notable for its impressive production of jasmine, lavender, roses and mimosa, flowers used as the main component of perfumes. A large number of French perfumeries still use quality natural essences in their blends.

2. Exclusivity

Because of the long history surrounding France’s perfume industry, the ingredients used and the quality of the fine fragrances that the perfumers continue to create, the growth in the popularity of luxury perfumes sets France aside as the market leader.

3. Skill and Craftsmanship

The blending skills of a lot of the master perfumers and perfumeries are often skills that are centuries old. They have spent a lot of years fine-tuning their perfume making craft to ensure they continue to compose perfumes that are outstanding and financially successful. Some French perfumeries are so hands on that they still prefer the produce their own raw materials from aromatic botanical materials.

Some of the long established French perfumeries that continue to make new perfumes in the classic style include Molinard, Galimard and Fragonard.

Buying French Perfumes

Buying French perfume is no different from buying any other perfume, except that they tend to cost more than other perfumes. There are specialist retailers that sell top of the range fine fragrances and niche perfumes for those who prefer top quality perfumes. If the high prices of these types of perfumes make buying of these perfumes, you can always buy small samples from retailers who decant fine fragrances for those who can’t afford to buy big bottles of the choice of perfumes.

Alternatively, you can attempt to blend spot on versions of the fragrances by blending your own scents using ingredients sourced from reputable supplier. On the whole French perfumes are generally classified as luxury perfumes and usually sell for more than those make in other countries. With French perfumes, you are not merely buying a scent but also a tradition. This is perhaps the real reason why they are truly special.
