Factors That Affect The Need For A Handyman

June 2, 2023 By

During the past decades, it was not profitable for a handyman to complete smaller jobs. Instead they chose to be a part of much larger jobs. Since the cost to advertise a small job was the same as a larger project, their advertising costs were too high. Consequently, they weren’t able to make a decent wage on smaller tasks. The 1990’s showed a drastic change within this profession.Eight FactorsThere are eight primary factors that contributed to the change of handymen only accepting larger jobs. These include:1. The do-it-yourself market is declining2. A large portion of Americans are white-collar3. Housing is a large contributor to financial future4. Houses have become more complicated5. Changeover to a credit-based society6. More American women work7. Increase in the number of handicapped and aging homeowners8. The U.S. is a brand name societyOne of the major factors for an increase in the handyman business is that the do-it-yourself industry is greatly declining. Americans have less leisure time per week so they do not have time to engage in these projects. Time has become much more important than money. Also a large portion of the American population is white collar. They do not have the skills to perform this type of work. Furthermore, the housing market has become the primary contributor to the financial future of individuals. If they complete a do-it-yourself project incorrectly, the equity and value of the house could be compromised. Therefore it’s safer to hire a professional to complete the task. Similarly houses have become more complicated than in the past. As technology has progressed, so has the knowledge of different aspects of a home. Another factor contributing to the hiring of a handyman is the cost of smaller jobs. Most projects cost under $500. Although individuals do not have that much money in their accounts, they can pay by credit. This makes it easier to split the payments. Also more women have entered the workforce and cannot completely maintain the home during the day. Therefore a professional can fix these small issues that may have been prevented through constant care. Additionally as the baby boomer population is aging and more are becoming handicapped, they cannot easily complete these tasks. Finally American culture has become a brand name society and the handyman industry is no exception. There are plenty of brand name professional services now available. The rise in handymen over the past twenty years is a direct result of a changing society which includes technological, economic and cultural changes. As we progress, the job function and need for this type of professional will greatly increase creating a boom in the industry.
