Russian state-owned news networks RT News and Sputnik have been restricted in Europe, according to Meta, Google, and TikTok parent company ByteDance. As per Facebook’s parent company Meta, the measure implies that RT and Sputnik’s Facebook, as well as Instagram profiles, will no longer be available from inside the European Union. On Twitter, Meta’s worldwide relations vice president Nick Clegg remarked, “We have received requests from a number of governments and the EU to take extra actions in regard to Russian state-sponsored media.”
“We will be blocking access to RT and Sputnik across the EU at this time due to the unusual nature of the current circumstances”, he added. Google said on Tuesday that it will limit access to RT and Sputnik’s YouTube channels as well “throughout Europe”. “We’re restricting YouTube channels associated with RT and Sputnik across Europe, effective immediately, due to the current conflict in Ukraine. Our systems will take some time to completely ramp up. Our teams are continuing to monitor the issue around the clock in order to respond quickly”, according to the firm.
ByteDance confirmed to the Washington Post on Monday that it has also banned access to the accounts of RT and Sputnik. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has already prompted social media corporations to alter their systems. The social media companies’ statements come after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s remarks on Monday, in which she underlined the EU’s sanctions against Russia and its partner Belarus.
